Construction has traditionally been male-dominated, but that’s changing, thanks to skilled, passionate professionals like Hayley who works for Sheridan Group of companies as Operations Manager

To further mark Women in Construction Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the women helping to shape the future of our industry, and more importantly our Sheridan Businesses.

Construction has traditionally been male-dominated, but that’s changing, thanks to skilled, passionate professionals like Hayley who works for Sheridan Group of companies as Operations Manager. We sat down with her to talk about her career journey, challenges, and advice for the next generation of women in construction.

Can you tell us a bit about your role and how you got into construction?

“I currently work as the Operations manager and PA to the managing director of Sheridan Group, where my day-to-day role involves running and managing the Concrete, FM and Fire businesses, no two days are the same which I absolutely love. I’ve worked with the Sheridan family for a very long time, and I love the diversity of my role.

I didn’t initially plan a career in construction, but I was drawn to the industry because once id began a job in managing the filed my mantra was that I wouldn’t ask the lads to do something I wouldn’t so I had to do it, it began with lift engineering and moved onto becoming a fire technician and Once I started I really began to thrive of the fast paced nature of the construction environment

I realised how many opportunities there are to learn and progress and that as a team you can achieve any challenge together.”

What Attracted You to the Industry

“What I enjoy most is seeing a project come together from start to finish. There’s a real sense of achievement in knowing you’ve helped build something tangible that will be used for years to come. No two days are ever the same, and I love the teamwork involved.”

What has your experience been like as a woman working in a traditionally male-dominated industry?

“Like many women in construction, I’ve faced a few challenges along the way, but overall my experience has been positive. The industry is changing, and I’ve seen a growing awareness around inclusivity and respect. Confidence, resilience, and having supportive colleagues makes a huge difference.”

How does Sheridan support women in construction?

“Sheridan is really supportive when it comes to development and inclusion. There’s a strong focus on training, progression, and equal opportunities, which makes it a great place to build a long-term career.”

What advice would you give to women considering a career in construction?

“Go for it. Don’t be put off by stereotypes, construction offers so many different career paths. Ask questions, be confident in your abilities, and don’t be afraid to take up space. There’s never been a better time for women to join the industry.

What would you like to see change in the industry in the future?

“I’d love to see more women represented across all roles, especially in leadership positions. Continued focus on diversity, early education, and visibility of role models will really help drive long-term change.”
